How do I enable a drop down without protecting the document?

I have a document that is I do not protect it will not show or allow drop
downs. When I protect it, the rest of the form cannot be filled out. How do
I unprotect and show these drop downs? Thanks.

That's the way protected forms work. You need to insert text form fields
where you want users to be able to insert data. See

I had the same problem, so I used AutoTextList. I found the solution on this
list. Here is the doc to which they directed me. This guy is awesome!
