We now have MSWord 2007. My document is 28 pages long. I want to number
pages 1 through 19 only. How to do I discontinue page numbering without
eliminating all of the previous page numbering?

Insert a Section Break (Continuous, or Next Page if appropriate),
display Headers & Footers, deselect Same as Previous, and delete the
page number from the second section. (Or have they totally changed
everything in 2007?)

Assuming you are numbering in the Header...
Headers and Footers can be linked to previous or unlinked. Your
H&Fs are linked at the moment. You will need to go into the first Header
that you want to stop numbering at and click on the Link to Previous button
(to unlink it) on the H&F toolbar, then click on the Next button (takes you
to the next section's header) and click it again, repeating this until you
reach the last Header.

Hope this helps.

You could equally replace the Page field with a conditional field and avoid
the section break eg

{IF {Page} < 20 "{Page}"}

or

{IF {Page} < 20 "Page {Page} of 19"}

The brackets {} are placed with CTRL+F9
