Ensure that your boot order has the floppy set as first boot device.. use a
Windows 98 boot diskette to boot your machine..

Learn how to use the FDISK function such that you can remove any NTFS
partitions, creating new DOS partitions in place.. http://www.fdisk.com

Having done all of the above, boot from the diskette again, and then start
your Win 98 install using your Win 98 installation media..

As a general rule, you can't uninstall an operating system. You have to
reformat the drive and install another operating system cleanly.

There's an exception to that, however. If you did an upgrade from Windows 98
or Me, and took the option to save the previous operating system and also
did not convert your drive to NTFS, then you can find an entry in
Add/Remove Programs. Clicking on that will uninstall Windows XP and revert
to the previous operating system.

If there's no entry in Add/Remove Programs, then one or more of those
conditions wasn't met, and your only choice is to reformat and install
whatever operating system you want cleanly.

Why do you want to take a step backwards?

There is no DOS mode within XP, and in general you can't do this, except by
booting from a DOS diskette. And if your hard drive is NTFS, if you boot
from a DOS diskette the hard drive will be invisible, unless you also run
special software.

Hi,

Boot the system with a Win98 boot floppy and run fdisk. Remove the non-dos
(if using NTFS) partition(s), then create a new primary dos partition. Exit
fdisk and restart to the floppy, load CD drivers this time. Format the new
primary dos partition, then run setup from the Win98 CD.

The normal way to "uninstall" any operating system is to format
the hard drive and install a new OS of your choice.

Only if you performed an upgrade from Win98/Me, elected to backup
the old system files, and didn't convert the partition to NTFS, can
you then boot into Safe Mode and click Start > Control Panel
Add/Remove Programs. All of these conditions must be met for the
uninstall option to be available.

Your computer doesn't boot up right now?

Since you have to do some kind of repair, do you want to repair XP or revert
to Win 98?

Can download boot disk from web.
www.bootdisk.com

Does your floppy and cd drive both work?

The OP's initial post gives clues that would answer your question of 'repair
or revert'..

Yes. He/she only asked about revert BUT didn't give justification for request!!

Which OS do you think they are better off with??

Need
help.
How
I
windows xp.

I would be bound to say XP, BUT..

The OP's machine may be wholly incapable of supporting XP.. the fact that
'revert' was mentioned suggests that the machine originally ran Win 98,
maybe even 95, and could be a K6 223mhz, 64mb Ram, 4gb HDD and 2mb S3 video
card..

Assuming that the machine is capable of running XP without eye candy, the OP
may not have a keycode for XP which has clean installed, wiping out any
chance of easily reverting back to the original OS..

We have very little to go on, and it's not over yet.. the OP seems unable to
make a Win 98 boot diskette, so one can only imagine the problems
encountered when FDISK is run.. it is also possible that the diskette is ok,
but HDD0 is first in the boot order, and the OP has no idea that BIOS has to
be entered to get the floppy to boot first, despite being told this..

I do think that the OP will eventually have to get the services of somebody
local to help out, be they professional or just knowledgeable friend
status..
