How do I delete items without new item opening?

Using Outlook Express 6, when I have an email open and I delete it the next
one in the list is opened. How do I prevent this? All I want to do is
return to my inbox.

Hit your Esc key and return to your Inbox before you delete the message.

This newsgroup is for Outlook, which is part of Office, not Outlook Express,
which is part of Internet Explorer. They are two totally different programs.
