How do I de-activate XP to install on a new comp?

I just finished putting together a new computer, and due
to the 1 computer limit on the activation, am unable to
install my copy of XP on that comp - do I need to de-
activate on the old computer somehow, or will I need to
call the activation phoneline and have them deactivate on
the old and activate on the new?

How do I "deactivate", move to another computer, or sell
a previously activated XP?

Greetings --

There is no "de-activation" process, as such.

Assuming a retail license (OEM licenses are not transferable),
simply remove WinXP from the computer it is currently on, and install
it onto the new one. If it's been more than 120 days since you last
activated that specific Product Key, you'll most likely be able to
activate via the Internet without problem. If it's been less, you
might have to make a 5 minute phone call.

Here are the facts pertaining to activation:

There is no 'deactivate'. Provided this was a retail copy - not OEM
sold with hardware that is licensed solely to the first machine it is
installed on, you just remove from machine A (eg format disk) and
install on B. When it comes to activation, if it is more than 120 days
since you last did it, you will find it will go through on the net just
like first time. If not, you will have to phone a toll-free number that
will be given, to explain and swap one long number for another to check
back as you type it in. About 10 mins - minor hassle as long as you
expect it
