How do I create extractstring formula?

I have created a cell using VLOOKUP formula. Now I wanted to extract
information from that cell. A friend of mine told me to use extractstring
formula but it doesn't seem to be on the list! Please help!
 
You probably need the LEFT, MID and RIGHT functions to extract from that
cell. Check them out in Help.
