How do I create a custom calendar?

Is there a way to create a custom calendar that has repeating dates,
like holidays and birthdays? What I'm really looking for is a way to
do this so that I can save it for next year and add some different
pictures to the header, and maybe update my repeating events
(birthdays, holidays, etc.).
Is it better to do something like that with a macro, or just create one
with a repeating formula in the cells? The MS-Office templates and the
MS-Word Calendar Wizard aren't much help, because I want to print it
on 11" by 17" paper.
