For some reason that I cannot explain when I type the straight numeric value
617 in the A Cell of my spreadsheet, Excel converts it to 9/7/1901 or 9-Sep.

In Tools Menu, Options, Edit I have cleared the check box for Automatic
completion.

I do not no why Excel is inserting a date value in the cell, and I have not
been able to edit and correct that A cell value back to 617 without Excel
changing number back to the date 9/7/1901 or 9-Sep format.

Thank you for any help you can give me to rectify this problem.

You checked AutoComplete, but you didn't check the cell format:
Format + Cells + Number
Set it to number or general or currency but not Date.
