My Cell Input is Changed to Different Value by Excel

Hi! I typed in this value in a cell: 525.5, and hit the enter key.

Excel changed the value to a date and time: 6/18/1901 12:00 PM.

What the heck is going on?

The cell is formatted as a date. Go to Format-->Cells and then change the
format to a number!
