I have half a dozen .wav files that I would like to transcribe to .doc or
..txt files. What is the best solution short of actually typing out a
transcription myself?

I believe Dragon Naturally Speaking can do this, but it is not particularly
cheap and you would have to train it to understand the voice on the file
which might be easier said than done. It might be quicker and cheaper to pay
someone to type it for you.
