How do I connect two computers in a network... revisited

Steve and Jason, and whoever else read this,
I understand about a crossover cable, but here's the thing:
I did have a laptop to my desktop LAN connection with my Belkin CAT6 patch
cable and I don't remember how I did it (the steps). I had to reinstall my
WinXP
recently on the desktop, so naturally this connection is lost now. I think
the success of this connection is may be somehow tied up with my original
setup. Actually I have 2 desktops.
Desktop # 1 is connected to the Internet through a DSL access point which is
a modem at the same time. Desktop # 2 was also connected to Internet through
this access point but wirelessly. And, finally, my laptop was connected to
Desktop # 2 with the afore mentioned patch cable (for speedy transfer of
files) as well as to the internet -- wirelessly. Now can you, guys, please
explain me how this could have succeeded? I guess I shouldda written the
walkthrough when I was doing it. All systems are WinXP Pro SP2.

Thank you in advance.

the first question is if Belkin CAT6 patch cable is crossover cable? If yes, what are the IP addresses in the both computers?

Robert, I'll let you know when I come home this evening. Actually, I thought
patch and crossover cables are different things. Also, I think all their
crossover cables are yellow and other cables are blue, etc.

Robert, It's not a crossover cable, and the IP addresses are different and not static.
