How do I clean up the system volume information?

The file size is over 7GB right now, why? Can I clean it up to reduce
the file size? If so, how do I do it? TIA!

Hi

Right click My Computer and select Properties>System Restore. Highlight the
appropriate drive and click 'Settings'. Then adjust the slider to the left
to decrease the amount of disk space available to SR. I have mine set 1000
MB which gives me plenty of checkpoints to revert to.

System Volume Information is the System Restore data.
The space used is dependant on the space you allocate.
Open System Restore:
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore.
Click "System Restore Settings" on the left side.
You can adjust the space using the slider.
Unless you will never need System Restore, do not reduce space too much.
Although most do not feel the need for the default 12%.

There are also options to delete some or all Restore Points but whatever
space you select will soon fill up with older Restore Points deleted on a
First in.First out basis.

The System Volume Information is the folder in which WinXP's System
Restore feature stores information used to recover from errors. By
default, WinXP sets aside a maximum of 12% of the partition's size for
storing System Volume Information, but the amount of space set aside for
this purpose can be adjusted by the user. Start > All Programs >
Accessories > System Tools > System Restore > System Restore Settings,
select the pertinent partition and click Settings.

If you don't want to use System Restore, simply turn off the System
Restore feature (Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools >
System Restore, System Restore Settings) and reboot. This will delete
all of your Restore Points.

This folder contains your System Restore Points.

Is your hard drive around 60GB in size? By default, System Restore takes 12%
of the drive for this purpose.

You not only can, but should, reduce it. That default of 12% is almost
always considerably too large. In practice you can seldom go back more than
a week or two, because any more than that and your registry gets out of
synch with everything else. So allocating space for more than a dozen or so
restore points is a waste.

So I would give it just 1-2GB. Change it by right-clicking My Computer and
choosing Properties. On the System Restore tab, click Settings, and use the
slider to lower the number.
