How do I change my keyboard settings?

The pound sign above the number 3 comes out as # when i press it in word.
the @ sign is above the 2 in place of the " sign
help please!

In Windows XP, click on Start | Control Panel | Regional and Language
Options | Languages tab | Details | Settings tab, and change the
"Default input language" to your preference.

To elababorate on Garfield's reply, you have Windows set up with an American
keyboard pattern, but you are using a UK keyboard which has a different
layout.
