I would like to save the e-mail account settings in readiness to transfer
onto a new pc.

Are the settings saved with the .pst file that I have backed up through the
import/export command?

The account settings are in the Registry in the key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows
Messaging Subsystem\Profiles\yourprofilename

You could try exporting that key and importing it into the new machine's
registry.
