How do I avoid pasting over cells?

I'm pasting an HTML table into a worksheet using paste special (HTML).
If there are any cells with data, they are written over by the pasted
HTML table. How do I get the Paste Special to act similar to the
Insert Copied Cells function? The Insert Copied Cells function will
move the cells down and insert the new data without writing over
anything.

Also, how do I extend the undo history to allow undoing several
actions back?

I'm not sure you can change this behavior.

But could you copy it to an unused area (temporary worksheet/workbook) and then
do your copy|paste from there.

An extra step, but it might work for you.

the undo stuff requires a change to the windows registry:

Don't know how you resolve the first problem unless you insert enough rows to
handle the copied material before pasting.

To add to the 16 default undo levels see this KB article which involves a
Registry change.
