How do I attach File as a shortcut in Tasks?

In old recurring tasks in Outlook, I had file(s) inserted as shortcuts, so
that when I opened the task I could find the file needed for the task; and
when I made changes to the file there, it changed my original file as well.
Is that still possible? (We recently had our network server updated and none
of my task attachments now exist, and "Insert" doesn't have "as Shortcut" as
an option now.)
We are using Office Outlook 2003, to which my station was updated about 1.5
yrs ago from and earlier version.

Make textbased links instead \\servername\sharename\filename.txt
