TO OP:
there are 2 option in Vista Explorer that may make a difference.
right click on the header in the right pane of explorer where NAME, DATE,
etc is and look at the top 2 options for column width.
too bad one of our resident nannies could not see his way to answer.

I tried to set-up all my subfolder directories with the same layout in
Vista,
3 different ways, including selecting: Tools, Folder Options, View. The
"details" view part or general layout worked, but the width and location
of
the fields didn't work. Either there's another way, or this feature
doesn't
work, although it worked properly in XP and ME.

Didn't you even read his two posts? It wasn't an issue about how to size
columns it's an issue about making these settings stick and to have it
customized in three different ways, i.e. Templates. On top of which I don't
think he will find anything to fix it in the long run, it's a bug in Vista -
the inconsistency in the view.
