How do I apply layout changes to multiple slides?

If I select a standard layout in powerpoint that I want to apply to selected
slides, and then I modify the layout (by changing the size and position of
the placeholders, for example), how can I apply those changes to the
following slides without doing them one at a time manually?
I would think that creating a master slide would be the answer, but
Powerpoint 2003 does not let you select a different layout in master view.
What am I doing wrong?

Emily,

you cannot change layouts in PowerPoint 2003. You can change place and
dimension of placeholders on the master, but that affects all slides. Or you
can create a sample slide and duplicate it.

In the slides pane on the left, select the slides you want to reapply the
layout to. Then click the slide layout icon in the slide layout pane on the
right.
