How do I alphabetize a table of contents?

I've created a Table of Contents in Word, but it's quite length, and would be
far more user friendly if it were alphabetized. Any idea how I do that?

By definition, a table of contents lists headings by page number. You
can limit the number of levels in an existing TOC by editing the field
code. For more, see
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/formatting/TOCSwitches.htm. (In a new TOC, you
can specify your options in the Index and Tables dialog box, of course.)

However, if you really want an alphabetical list of items, create an
index instead. See:
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/formatting/Createindex.htm.

A table of contents in anything other than page order will be confusing as
hell, and absolutely the opposite of user friendly. Do you mean 'index' ?

Hi =?Utf-8?B?QWxsYW4gVEZG?=,

Indexes are alphabetized. TOCS are always in the order things appear.

that said, as long as you don't need to have it update dynamically anymore, you
could
- Select the TOC
- Press Ctrl+Shift+F9 to turn it into plain text
- Alphabetize

But if you need this to be dynamic, look up in the Word help on how to create an
Index.
