I am not getting the automatic formatting of phone numbers when entering
phone numbers.

Masking of phone numbers requires setting your default dialing location for
your operating system correctly.

I show the US in my dialing properties, but is there somewhere else that I
need to say US? I can't find anywhere that it is not US. Thanks.

What do you mean? The US is not a dialing location. Your area code is your
dialing location. You need to set your Area Code in Control Panel > Phone
and Modem Options > Dialing Rules
