How do I access a file that isn't shared to the network?

I made a stupid mistake of restricting a few of my folders to only be
accessed by MY user account. However, I recieved a virus that damaged my C
drive. Upon reinstalling Windows XP, I was no longer able to access the
files I had "hidden". Does anyone undertand this and can help me solve it?
