How do get XP Home to see shared drive on XP Pro on Win2K server

Hello,

I am trying to enable a new computer (#1) that is loaded with XP Home to be
able to see the C drive on another (#2) PC (which has WinXP Pro) that is tied
to the Win2000 network with a Netgear FVS 318 router. I have already enabled
the Share properties on the #2 PC to a specific folder on the C drive.

Is there a way to do this?

Thanks,

Phil

If you want your WinXP machine to access a share on
a Windows 2000 Server then you should ask your
network administrator to set this up for you.

Hi Pegasus,

I wish it were that easy. We outsource our IT, and he is on vacation.
Besides, I know my boss doesn't want to pay money ($80/hr) for something that
may/may not work, which is why I posted to this NG in the first place.

I just want to see if this is even do-able, and if it is, what are the steps
involved?

BTW, should I be posting this to another NG, instead, or is this the one
that is applicable?

Thanks,

Phil

Of course it is doable and if your IT person cannot do it
then you should sack him - it is standard stuff. He must
ensure that the machines have the correct IP settings, he
may have to adjust the firewall settings, he must create
the share and arrange for appropriate access permissions,
he may have to create extra accounts unless you're in a
domain environment and he may have to set "Simple
File Sharing". In other words there are a few things
required that justify his hourly charge.

This is the correct group to post such questions.

XP Home does not want to participate in a domain security model. If this is
something that you require of the laptop for business, upgrade it to XP Pro.
It's called "Home" for a reason. If this is something you need to do just
once to copy some files, the easiest thing to do is to create a share on the
XP Home Laptop, and copy the files from the Pro to the Home. Usually
upgrading an OEM computer from Home to Pro at the time of sale is around
$75 - $80, and is absolutely necessary for ANY business computer.
