How do backup to a Dat 40 tape?

Dear all:

I have a HP Surestore Dat 40 tape backup on an Adaptec SCSI card running on
Win2K professional.

I am trying to use the backup utility to perform a system backup. However,
whenever I "Start Backup" I get the following error:

"There is no unused media available with the selected type.

Add unused medai or click Cancel to select another type.

Note: It may take up to 60 seconds for Removable Storage to recognize new
media."

I have to press Cancel!! And then nothing happens. Of course I have a
blank tape (comes from HP) in the drive!

I did remember that long time ago while I was testing the tape drive, I came
across a step that asks me to format the tape. But I don't get that
anymore! What is happening?

Thanks a lot in advance.

use the Removeble Storage apllication to "Prepare" the tape.
Right-click My Computer and press Manage. Double-click
Removable Storage.
