How come I can't use the mouse wheel to scroll in Word 2007? Why? What's goin' on here?

N

Nehmo

I have Windows XP Home SP2 and Office 2007.

My mouse wheel works to scroll in other programs, including other ones
of Office 2007, and including the Help of Word 2007, but it doesn't
work in Word 2007 itself. The other methods used to scroll: dragging
the scroll bar's little rectangle, clicking on the arrows at the ends
of the scroll bar, clicking the wheel *button* and then positioning
the pointer above or below, using the right side strip of the touch-
pad on this laptop, or using the arrow keys, all work. But I can't
scroll the document using the wheel of the mouse in Word 2007.

When the pointer is over the ribbon in Word 2007, the mouse wheel
functions to rotate through the tabs of the ribbon.

The mouse happens to be a AMW15US Targus Notebook Wireless
Rechargeable Laser Mouse http://www.targus.com/us/product_details.asp?sku=AMW15US
.. I'm using the default settings. I don't see any place to download
new drivers. But, considering I can scroll in other programs, I tend
to believe this isn't a hardware issue.

I'm not positive, but I think I've had this problem ever since I've
had the mouse. Before this mouse, I only used the touch-pad, and
before that, I used a different machine that had another version of
Word.

Someone else posted a similar problem, and he or she fixed it
http://snipurl.com/1l2so by removing "an IBM USB mouse app" from the
startup. I don't seem to have that, though. Maybe another process is
the culprit. I suppose I could start disabling them one by one. I have
Windows Defender Process Explorer that's up to the task.

To repeat the question: How do I fix it so that I can use the mouse
wheel to scroll a document in Word 2007?

---------------------------
I solved the problem. I can now use the mouse wheel normally. I'll
post this anyway because I worked for an hour writing it. And it might
help someone who searches too ;--} .

I exited from the Mi Micor app, mouse32a.exe, that was showing in the
system tray and lived at
C:\Program Files\Micro Innovations\Mouse
I also unchecked it in Start > Run> msconfig > startup tab
I'll uninstall it after this post.

I vaguely remember installing the Micro Innovations software one night
a long time ago when I was trying to use a spare mouse I had lying
around.

That is not the behaviour with my mouse. And when the mouse pointer is over
the ribbon, the mouse wheel continues to scroll the document. If there is a
setting somewhere, it is most likely in the mouse software.

The mouse wheel should scroll the ribbon when the mouse cursor is over
it, not the document.

Yes, you are right if the Ribbon is expanded. Does anybody work with it
that way? It takes up too much valuable screen space for me.

Hi Nehmo,

If you are using either the LaserFiche or Paperport add-in, or have a mouse that has a setting for 'Universal scrolling' [or
similar] enabled these have been reported to cause problems with the Mouse operation in MS Word 2007.

FWIW, two of the newsgroups listed in your message:
microsoft.public.word and
microsoft.public.word.general
aren't ones carried on the MS server, news://msnews.microsoft.com

I was having this exact problem

I resolved it by uninstalling the third party mouse software that was
installed on my PC - DELL Premium Mouse Suite

Scrolling works as it is suppose to now

P

Panic

I tried that and you were correct. My mouse now works in Word 2007. Only
problem is, without the mouse software I lose the "double click" function I
set up on clicking my wheel button. Losing that function is more troubling
to me than not having scroll capability in Word 2007. So I reinstalled my
mouse software and again have double click on the scroll wheel but cannot
scroll in Word 2007.

The double click scroll wheel function is not available using Control
Panel.. Mouse.. functions. Anyone have any ideas on how to get ALL
functions working? It is a GE IR optical mouse 97986, Rev.3 WK4806. I went
to GE's web site and downloaded the driver for this mouse. It doesn't give
a date. Maybe if it's updated it may work with Word.

P

Panic

This is an update. I installed the mouse software I just downloaded from GE
and it seems to be identical to what is on the CD that came with the mouse I
bought last year. I still have the problem that, when using the mouse
software to give me the full use of my mouse, the scroll wheel does not
function in MS Word 2007 normal use. FWIW. If I open Word's Help file, the
scroll wheel works there. It also works in all other programs including
PowerPoint 2007 and Excel 2007.
