How can the pst file be so big??

I had a pst file (which outlook runs from) which was 1.6gb. I deleted all
the large emails I have to try and reduce it's size and now it's 1.7gb!!!
Can anyone explain what is going on and how I reduce the file size?

I am running ClamWin anti virus & SpamBytes on Outlook.

Have you emptied the Deleted Items folder?

Make a backup of the PST file, and run scanpst against the file (just to
make sure that there are no inconsistencies in the file), then compact
the file (reopen Outlook, right-click on the folder, Properties,
Advanced, Compact Now).
