Arghh.. Please MVP's I need your help

Last year we upgraded to Exchange 2003. 2 companies merged to form a
new one. (not a take over)

So we had no upgrade option other than creating as it happened a new
domain name, servers etc.

In order for people to access their old emails we exported them from
each of the 2 old exchange servers.

This has left us with 3000 pst files. Unknown to me until recently the
server where the pst's reside had it permissions so that people could
add/delete from their PST files. This was not what was agreed and I now
have to change this. But I since discover that it was changed because
Outlook cannot open READ-ONLY .pst files.

I now need a way to move forward to make them read only. I am happy to
explore any 3rd party utilities. My requirements are quite simple.

I already am looking through slipstick but am not sure which will work
if any

PSTs don't work at all if they're read-only. I think you're going to have
make users move the data they want to their mailboxes then delete the PSTs
as one of the only ways to get them to stop using them. Of course, you'll
need server space & such...

Like Vince says, they can't be made read only. Depending on your needs, they
will either need to merge their mail back into their mailbox or your can use
one of the archive methods that exports the mail to a different format,
which can then be marked read only. They are under user tools on that page.

If they need to access the data in the psts, it should be moved back into
the mailbox. The psts should hold archive data only - data that they very
rarely need to view.
