If you mean the English version of PPT 97, I don't believe you can do this, at
least not directly.

But look on your Office CD for the \ValuPack\FarEast folder.
In it, you'll find several installers for language support; I'm guessing that
Simplified Chinese would be CHSSUPP.EXE (the other one is CHTSUPP.EXE, which I'd
assume to be Chinese Traditional)

Installing this will install fonts and other support so that PPT 97 can
*display* Chinese text. It doesn't include any sort of IME (input method
editor, software that lets you enter roman characters and have them converted to
the correct Chinese characters).

To enter text, try using a shareware Chinese word processor (try one of the
programs from Hongbo Ni like NJStar). From there, you may be able to paste into
PPT after setting the font in the PPT text block to the Chinese font you want to
use.

Experiment with different Paste Special options if it doesn't work with a normal
copy/paste from the word processor. And if it still doesn't work, try
copy/pasting into MS Word first, then from there into PPT.

If you need to do more than a little bit of text, doing it this way is obviously
not very economical.
