don't need to update mail each time i go in. send/recieve update feature
slows my system down considerably. i would rather not simply turn off my
wireless card as i may want internet access... rather i am looking for the
"manual update" function on Outlook 2003 - if one exists.

any help would be appreciated.

From the main Outlook window, try CTRL + ALT + S to bring up the
send/receive settings. From there you should be able to configure Outlook
to do what you want. (e.g. uncheck the box to check for mail every X minutes
and it will stop polling.)

In addition to what neo said, click Tools>Options>Mail Setup and uncheck "Send
immediately when connected". That and neos suggestion will then require you
to click Send/Receive.
