How can I stop the Windows updater restart reminders?

I am running Win XP SP1. I have autoupdate set to "ask before
downloading". I carefully pick and choose what to update and in
what order. After the download is complete and the update(s) are
installed, frequently I am told - not asked - to restart.

OK. I understand why some kinds of updates require a restart.
But, how do I kill the reminder message, which keep bugging me
more than once a minute? There's no "don't show this message
again" check box and the red "X" close window icon is grayed
out.

When I'm in the middle of something that is important to me, the
/last/ thing I want to do is restart. So, other than waiting to
do the updates until I'm free, how can I simply tell Bill to
stop bugging me?

Hi,

You need to stop the Automatic Updates service to get rid of the
reboot message.

Option 1:

Start/Run -->

net.exe stop wuauserv

Option 2:

Start/Run -->

services.msc

Find "Automatic Updates" in the list, right click on it and select
"Stop".

Today Torgeir Bakken (MVP) spoke these views with conviction
for everyone's edification:

Great! Just what I was looking for! Thanks muchly.
