how can I stop recurring emails?

I have several emails which keep recurring even though they were sent a long
time ago. I have made up a rule which sends them to the deleted item folder.
I still have to empy that folder quite frequently. Is there a way to keep
these emails from coming in every time outlook checks for mail? I am running
outlook 2003.

Usually when I see that happen it's because the messages are corrupted or
stuck at the server. Can you log in to the server, perhaps via WebMail and
delete those messages from there?
