How can I see where italics command is on and off

I have just switched from Word Perfect to Microsoft Word 2007 and miss seeing
where the codes are placed in the document. Is there ar way to see them or
should I go back to WordPerfect?

You should be able to tell the difference between italics and roman by
inspection when text is present. When it's not, you can place the insertion
point in the document and look at the Italics button to see whether it's on
