How can I preserve Hotfixes and Critical Updates?

My brother has a PC running XP HE SP1.

I want to perform a repair installation of XP HE, but I believe this may
result in the service pack and/or all the critical updates and hotfixes
being lost. Are these stored anywhere so that they may be backed up? My
brother doesn't want to install SP2 at this stage because of previous
problems with it.

Bob;
No, they can not be saved.
A Repair Installation will remove the updates and Service Pack.
Part of the reason to perform a Repair Installation is to repair corrupted
data.
If the corruption is in an update or Service Pack, the corruption would be
restored and you would be back where you started.

The possibility of problems with SP-2 or SP-2 is probably the same.
But most problems installing either can be prevented:
