The maximum size for a Word document is 32MB, but this applies to text only.
Multiple large graphics could conceivably bloat a document to the size you
cite (though that *is* pretty huge). You might try using Open and Repair in
case the document is damaged.

To follow up, FWIW, I've got a Word document into which I inserted ~100
photos ranging in size from 261 KB to 707 KB. The total size of the document
is less than 45 MB.
