How can I insert an animated .gif as a movie into my presentation.

I have created an animated .gif and when I try to insert it into my
PowerPoint presentation (PPT 2003), I do not have a .gif file type in the
drop down box.

If I use the all files option, the .gif appears and loads into the
presentation but is then a simple graphic and not an animation as I need.

It should work if you go to the Insert menu and choose Picture and From
File. Animated GIFs are considered pictures and not movies. It also
won't work in Normal/Edit View, only in Slide Show View.

Are you using "Insert", "Picture", "From File", or "Insert", "Movie", "From
File"? If you have an AVI file, it gets inserted as a movie, but an
animated gif is a picture.

Tom,
Animated Gifs are really graphics. to add them, use Insert--> Picture-->
From File. The gif won't move while you are in edit mode, but when you play
the presentation it will run.

That said, there are some problems with animated gifs that repeat only
defined numbers of times. For more information on getting around that, check
out this page of Sonia's site for the details:
