I'd like to add an animated GIF file into my powerpoint presentation. But
ever time I insert it in the slide, it becomes a picture. How do I add an
animated GIF file to my powerpoint presentation?

Which version of PowerPoint do you use? PowerPoint 97 (and older) versions
do not support animated GIFs, they are shown as a static picture. Only the
versions 2000 and newer show the animation. And: You can only see the
animation in screen show mode, not in slide edit mode.

Kind regards,
Ute

In addition to Ute's help, make sure that you are using Insert > Picture >
Picture from File. Animated GIFs are inserted as Pictures, not as Movies.

Did you run the presentation in Slide Show mode? The GIF won't animate in
Normal View.

How do you know that the file is an animated GIF? Most GIFs are not animated.
Have you tested it in other software, like GIF Construction Set?

Just open the GIF in your browser. If it's animated, it will show
there.

That depends on your browser. If you are using IE the GIF will open in the
default application that Windows uses for GIF's. In my case that's Microsoft
Photo Editor which displays the first frame of an animated GIF as a still
picture. Not a good test. FireFox and Netscape will display the same animated
GIF as an animation.

You can drag the GIF into an open IE window and it'll work as Hugh describes.

Using File, Open from the browser though ... what you said.
