How can I include captions in an index?

At the moment, when I selecting words for an index, when I 'mark all
entries', the captions are not marked. Ideally, I'd like them to be included
in the index with the number in bold to show it's a picture. Is any of this
possible? Thanks.

If you want a list of captions, you must use Insert>Reference>Index
and Tables; use the Table of Figures tab to create the list.

The problem is that the captions are not getting noticed at all - even if I
type in { XE "Toys" } it's not included in an index. (The captions are in a
text box, but still formatted as a caption.) The Table of Figures tab
doesn't find any entries either.

Word can't see text in a text box, so the Caption style isn't being seen by
the TOC, and the XE field isn't being seen by the index.
