How can I improve a network database's performance

Hello,

I have a database, which is on a network share drive. When people who are
fairly local access it, there are no problems. The problem is when people who
are across the country or overseas access the database, it is so slow it is
nearly worthless to use.

Can anyone recommend how make the database more efficient without using
replicas? Is there any other type of server or drive I should look into
utilizing?

To add to dlv's suggestion, Access databases do not do well when run in WAN environments, as you
