How can I give non-printing instructions to other users in a Word

I have a document that requires other users to input information in text form
fields and I would like a box to display on screen next to some of the fields
with instructions for other users but I don't want these instructions to
print on the document. I used to be able to do this in WordPerfect, can
anybody tell me if there is a similar function in Word and what it's called?
We are using Word 2003 but are looking at updating.

Use the form field help which puts instructions in the status bar.
