How can I freeze the format styles in Word?

When I make any changes to any part of a paragraph, a new style is displayed
in the style list. Further, I can't seem to make a format change for a single
occurrence without Word creating a new style. Is there some way to stop this?
Any hints on making Word 2000 and new version behave like the pre-Word 2000
in this respect?
Thanks,

See if this helps: Click on Tools, AutoCorrect Options and then on the tab
AutoFormat As You Type. Look at the section near the bottom Automatically
As You Type. Make sure none of the boxes there are checked, particuarly
Define Styles Based on Your Formatting. There are several other boxes there
(and in the AutoFormat tab) that most users prefer to leave unchecked, but
that is beyond your question.
