How can I edit the "*.dot" file?

I wanna edit some ".dot" file. When I open it with word, it is a blank page,
nothing. But the file size is about 400KB. I need help!!!!
 
A .dot file is a template. Document templates don't usually contain any
text--just styles, macros, AutoText, toolbars, formatting, etc. See
