How can I disable an account but retain previous messages?

I don't want to lose the information from an account that is now closed. I'm
afraid that if I remove the account using the Email Account wizard it will
also delete or move all the old messages from my inbox.

Removing or adding email accounts has NO effect on any data in your pst file

Right, but it will lose all the data for an Exchange account. Perhaps
mentioning that wouldn't give a false sense of safety.

Sure, but the original poster did NOT, so you should include every correct
answer, not just the one that leans the way you want it to lean. You gave a
correct answer only for a particular situation and there was not enough
information in the original post to limit yourself to that answer and consider
it complete.
