How can I close a document without closing the entire program

When using Word 2003, if I close a document it closes the entire program. Is
there a way to change this?

I am having the same problem - a very recent one, in fact. "File, Close"
results in shutting down Word, as does clicking the small "x." I have looked
at my normal.doc document and can't see what might be causing the shutdown.
What should I be looking for, how do I change it and what could be other
causes for this annoying new phenomenon.

Thanks,

I am also experiencing this problem, and it is happening with several of my
computers.

If I have only 1 document opened and I close it with the inner red X (not
the outter red X which would close the entire word program) instead of JUST
closing the document and leaving Word running, it closes the entire word
program.

Has anyone found a fix for this yet?

I have seen MANY posts on this issue and no solutions... it seems to be
something new in the last few months. Has some recent secuirty update caused
this?
