How to get MS Word program to remain open on desktop?

When working in Word, if I complete a document and close the document only,
the entire program closes! This only happens with Word (not Excel, PPT,
etc.) Is there a way to keep the program open on my desktop???
 
Word 2007? Don't use the cross in the top right corner of the window to
close documents as the last document will close the application also. Use
CTRL+F4 or add the Close command to the QAT.
