How can I check if a msgs was read w/o read receipt reply?

I am migrating from groupwise and key aspect I require is the ability to
check if an email was read without having to request a read receipt.
Groupwise is able to confirm delivery & read of a message in the properties
of the email. I am on a exchange server.
 
I also just switched from groupwise to outlook 2003. From what I have found
out, you cannot do this in outlook unless you specifically ask for a read
receipt for the e-mail.
 
I'm running a search to see if something similar can be done using VBA.
 
VBA won't change the fact that Outlook can't show data it doesn't have. And it only has read receipt data if you request a receipt and the recipient's mail software sends one back.
