Email Tracking

I wish to track the 'delivery' AND 'read' of Emails. I have recently changed
from Novell Groupwise to MS Exchange. Groupwise automatically time stamped
the delivery and read times of sent messages. This was usefull when a message
was sent to a large number of addresses. The reader had no option to deny
the 'read' time stamping. A review of the 'Sent Msg" properties would
display a list of recipients by name along with when the msg was read. I
don't want to be bogged down with a large number of 'Return Receipts' emails,
especially if the reader has the option of not sending the receipt. In a
business environment where reading your emails is mandatory, verification
with 100% accuracy, is a valuable tool.

AFAIK, your recipients must also be using the *same* MS Exchange server as
you are using in order to have reliable tracking; and to what level I don't
know because I am not familiar with MS Exchange. If you are trying to track
correspondence outside of the organization using the MS Exchange server, you
are at the mercy of the ability of the correspondents to refuse to honor
read requests.

And I NEVER send a read receipt for the reason that people use it to track
you down and then call you with a long conversation that interrupts the
business you were trying to complete.

Read receipts are optional unless mandated by corporate policy and backed up
by a GPO that disables the ability to refuse to send. And there are even
ways around this... trust me, I know.

Our department requires that all employees check their in-house email at
least once a day. This is because it is how the management distribute memos,
etc. (
Trying to cut down on paper, distribution is quicker, etc.) Management wants
to know that memos are being read. Individual 'Return Receipts' are a pain.
Looking at a summary such as with Groupwise is much easier. It's one page
that gets updated everytime a new recipient reads their email. If it can't be
done then I have to live with it (for now) and I will forward it to Microsoft
development as a sugestion.
