How can I avoid retyping the state in mail merge addresses?

I am typing hundred of mailing addreses that are all in the same state. How
can I avoid repeatedly typing the STATE cell in?
 
I set the default value to be equal to whatever was entered on the last record.
 
Are you using a form, or typing directly into a table?
Are there many different towns or just a few?
Multiple or just one state?
