How can I abort a R(epair) Install to start a full clean install ?

{I've unusually started this new post because my previous one "Trapped in
Repair Console..." got hijacked :blush:( }

My friend had several nasty viruses - I don't know how they got there, he
had Norton but by the time I saw his PC, it had been knobbled/disabled. There
were several malwares at once and we managed to clear some out ok. One of the
worst seems to be Trojan.Satiloler (Bluetooth.dll); also UnSpyPC and WareOut.
Possibly implicated also were ibm00010.dll, ibm00003.exe. We had problems
getting rid of everything and fixing his registry - apparently
Trojan.Satiloler messes up Userinit & ctfmon and other stuff so that now we
cannot log in on any account, including in safe mode.

One piece of advice was to do a R(epair) Install which we started but it
keeps freezing at 13mins to go. Since then I've had conflicting advice to go
for a full clean install but we can't seem to get out of the Repair install
-- everytime we boot from the CD, it wants to restart the R(epair) Install!

I made a DOS boot disk and that's the only way to circumvent it's insistence
on restarting the R(epair) Install.
However, it shows very few folders in C: e.g. not windows etc. (I was
going to try putting back a clean Userinit etc.)

So, my current Q's are ...
1. How can I abort the R(epair) Install to change to a full one? (Or any
better ideas on how to progress ?)
2. Why does the R(epair) abort at 13mins ?

Thanks for any help. Gerry )

Many viruses are designed to corrupt and destroy the
operating system. You can always remove the virus file,
but the damage caused by the execution of the malicious
virus code has already been done. Try the following:

If the "Repair Install" is unsuccessful, then you need to
start from scratch and perform a "Clean Install".

A repair install will not remove viruses and malware, which apparently
you still have and are interfering with the repair installation. At this
point the OS is so munged you are probably best of doing a clean install:

Since you didn't bother to actually _read_ the OP (as usual) you didn't
see that they'd already attemtped a repair install! Even if the repair
install completed it would NOT remove any viruses or malware anyway,
which are most likely still present and fouling the reapir install attempt.

The clean install route is the only option at this point.

Hi, thanks. I'm convinced to go for a Full Install. The only problem is that
the Targa XP CD isn't offering me that option. Everytime we boot from there,
it only offers to restart/recontinue a Repair Install (which freezes at
13mins to go).
Latest idea is to try to FDISK the HDD in the hope that the CD will offer
us a FULL install. I've not used FDISK before but assume it will be
straightforward.
I'll update again after trying that.

Thanks for your help. bw, Gerry )
