How big is 14M??

From my System Info, I've got:
Processor x86 Family 15 Model 6 Stepping 4 GenuineIntel ~3391 Mhz

Available Physical Memory 361.27 MB

For all of this, should a 14M Excel 2007 in WinXP Pro be too big to
handle well?

All of a sudden, I'm having problems with bogging down during
calculations and running macros. I've been fighting crashes all
day!! Is this file just oo big?

Hi Ed,

14M is not extremely big, but then, 1G is not too much for running Excel2007.

One thing you can do is rebuild the dependency tree; press ALT+SHIFT+CTRL+F9. This sometimes helps to clean a model where Excel
lost its way in the formulas.

Another thing to do (anyway) is to look at this article from Charles Williams:

A far better solution is to upgrade your version of Excel to 2003. ^.^

Seriously, although some people love 2007, I have not found it a worthwhile
upgrade. I tried the free trial version, but then deleted it and went back
to 2003. Reasons are:
Resource-hungry
I didn't find the new interface a big improvement
Some of my old vba modules would not run - I never found out why. I just
gave up.

I would love to! But this is at work, and I had no choice. I think
someone in Corporate has stock in MS . . .

I've had toolbars that I've relied on for years - suddenly gone!!
Most of the macros still work, but finding and running them is a
pain!!

a memory upgrade.

I'll try the hints you've provided. The biggest problem is a
Worksheet_Change macro - when I enter a date in one cell it
automatically copies down formulas, formatting and validations across
several cells in the row. Worked fine until yesterday - then it would
do one cell, go blank, redraw the screen, do another cell, go blank,
etc, and eventually just crash. Even when running in XL safe mode.
Very frustrating!!

Maybe you used to run the macros while Calculation was manual and now it's Automatic.
You don't always know what the state is; it is determined by the first opened workbook in that instance of Excel.
Check and correct if necessary before you run the macro:

Formulas tab>Calculation options block

Not sure if these factor in anywhere -
-- I just noticed the status bar is saying calculating with two
processors. When I pulled the system info for my initial post, it
showed the processor twice. According to BelArc, though, I only have
one processor - 3.4 GHz P4.
-- When I went into Options >> Advanced >> Formulas, Enable multi-
threaded calculations was checked, and Use all Processors was checked
- and it showed 2. I unchecked it, and it ran a bit faster. I
rechecked it and set it to use only one processor, and it may be
running the best yet.
-- This is running in Compatibility mode, with the workbook saved as
an XLS 2003 version.

I did remove Freeze Panes. That's gonna bite!
