When starting the browser for the first time, it gets
taken over by a search site (www.hotsearchbox.com -
Microsoft Internet Explorer). After this loads you can
close it by clicking on the X close box, then at some
later point it will automatically fire up again. This is
really bad if I am playing poker on line at the time.
Could even cost me a big pot.

I have enabled the selective content feature, entered the
site address, and chosen to "never allow" the page/site.
This did not help.

Can anyone help me get rid of this trap site forever?

Thanks in advance,
Edd

Hi,

It sounds like your computer has been infected with AdWare. These programs
can hijack your browsers, causing it to randomly direct to for-profit search
pages, or other advertising sites.

It's encouraged that you run an anti-spyware program, such as AdAware (link
below). This program will attempt to remove all spyware programs, including
those that could be responsible for the symptoms you are describing.

You may also wish to read the following article, as it explains the
ins-and-outs of what you may be dealing with.

If you are not comfortable configuring your computer, you I would recommend the
use of AdAware as this program has a lesser chance of causing any problems when
running it, and has a friendlier interface. Be sure to upload the latest
reference file after installing it.

Edd,
Try this first. Go to http://www.hotsearchbox.com/ At the bottom of the
page, click on "Reset your Search page back to MSN Click Here"

If unsuccessful with that:
Download and run Run CWShredder from
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html

Then download, install, *update* and run both of these programs:
Ad-aware from http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/
Spybot from http://security.kolla.de/ (Remove items listed in red-others are
optional.)
Both programs should be updated after installation- before use.

Then note the security tips and other useful information at:

just a note-when using spybot there is a immunize setting
where you can lock homepage and stop certain downloads (cookies and such)
also SpywareBlaster
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
is good to have along with spybot- it is a prevention tool
