Hotmail inbox notification

My computer keeps telling me that i have 1 or 2 email messages in my hotmail
inbox at the login screen on windows xp. This is really annoying because
whenever I actually check my hotmail, there is nothing there. This has
happened before, but I managed to sort out the problem. The first time it was
a virus that was causing this problem. This time, after conducting multiple
indepth virus scans ZoneAlarm has found no virus present. Could you please
tell me what this problem may be and how to remedy it?

surely this fix is just masking the problem and not actually getting to the
cause?
